Approach At peoplespace we are passionate about our ‘integrate and innovate’ approach, the added value it enables us to provide to our clients and the strength of the proven business case. To deliver maximum value the workstyle and workplace development process needs to be informed by a clear, evidence based understanding of the multi faceted requirements and performance factors associated with the different technical operations, the variety of tasks undertaken and the workstyle characteristics of the intended users. This data is incorporated into a fully integrated approach, where the key knowledge of the people, property and technology are synchronised from the very beginning, to enable a single unified design concept to be developed. As a result the new workspace envelope presents far more opportunities for achieving efficiency gains, encouraging productive collaborative working and supporting new ways of working, within an enjoyable, dynamic and highly adaptable working environment. In addition to supporting more scope for functional creativity, this approach also helps to eliminate many coordination issues at a very early stage and consequently makes it possible to deliver a fully considered solution within a faster time frame and at less cost. For successful innovative organisations, it is especially desirable that the design of new facilities considers, wherever possible, an inherent requirement for future flexibility and multi-functional adaptability, in order not to hinder further growth or the ability to respond to changing conditions. Team structures, project areas and the demands on technical facilities will naturally evolve, at times with rapid development pressures. Therefore, the spaces we design are organised with this requirement to support reconfiguration in mind and designed and specified in such a way that any possible associated future costs or potential for operational disruption are minimised. The synchronised development of flexible working adds further future proofing of the investment and helps to increase business resilience, as the operational agility is strengthened. The creation of these fresh new working environments provides an ideal opportunity for motivating and supporting cultural developments within the organisation. A ‘brand value’ inspired interior design can contribute to the encouragement of the corporate ethos, with a sense of collective identity and pride, while also including individual character areas and inspiring creative features. Appropriate management of expectations is a key feature of the Peoplespace approach and this includes indentifying project costs and outcome benefits at the earliest possible stage. Background Traditionally the world of office environment construction and refurbishment has been supported by separated disciplines operating with very different agendas and disconnected methodologies within ‘guarded’ knowledge silos. These disciplines include architects, construction, mechanical and electrical engineers, human resources, interior designers, ICT consultants, technology providers and furniture suppliers. Individual providers define themselves by comparing the benefits, services and value for money they offer against the competitors within their particular field. Each organisation can point to case studies with evidence of the possible benefits delivered by the individual package of work they delivered at a particular stage of a project and within the limitations of their specialist knowledge. Typically the project development ‘baton’ is handed on from one discipline set to next through the life cycle of the project, guided by the project manager. When work packages do overlap the project manager may facilitate some coordination but in conceptual terms the disciplines largely work in isolation. Consequently isolated pockets of benefit creation are offered to the client, each with a narrow scope for optimising the results defined by the traditional boundaries of each discipline and the gaps in understanding between them. Halbyn Rich, the creator of Peoplespace, found that through experience of a combination of challenging projects he had developed the understanding and expertise to deliver a far more integrated approach to workplace development projects with the ability to provide greater benefits over the traditional linear and compartmentalised standard. The enhanced benefits included improved cost and space efficiency, more inherent ‘future proofing’ adaptability within the working environments created and faster project delivery. Halbyn soon attracted clients that required solutions to ‘mission impossible’ projects and invitations to contribute to ‘new ways of working’ think tanks. The additional ingredient of new workstyle development provides the opportunity for even greater efficiencies and when included as part of the integrated approach the potential benefits for the employee and employer are multiplied to levels that can not be touched by the sum of traditional workstreams. Peoplespace Consulting Limited was founded on this proven ‘integrate and innovate’ philosophy and continues to enhance its project tools and support services, delivering significant advantage for our clients, year on year. As the Managing Director of Peoplespace, Halbyn Rich supports European and UK Government collaborative working projects for sustainable growth initiatives as an expert advisor. Halbyn is a regular expert speaker at forum events and seminars nationwide and in conjunction with Worklife Centre, flexibility.co.uk, Capita Conferences and Public Sector Forums. He is also a guest university lecturer for interior design and architectural students.
